Architects: Oxford Architects
Construction: MAKE
Location: Worcestershire, UK

Photographing this newly completed residence in the West Midlands delivered by MAKE Group offered a compelling intersection of architectural ambition, material integrity, and thoughtful spatial sequencing. Conceived in collaboration with Oxford Architects and with interiors by Rigby & Rigby, the project presented an opportunity to document not just a house, but a composed environment shaped by intention and lived experience.

From the outset, the scheme was envisioned as more than a home. The original dwelling on site was taken down to make way for a design tailored to family life while retaining enduring quality and future adaptability. The considerable groundwork that preceded the steel frame speaks to a commitment to precision, a quality that carried through every stage of construction and ultimately informed how the space performs visually and functionally.

One of the enduring qualities of this project is its sense of groundedness. Within a generous landscape, the architecture responds with clarity, material choices and proportions that feel honest and purposeful rather than ornamental. For a photographer, this translated into moments where natural light and texture became the protagonists. Large apertures and careful compositions allowed me to capture how daylight plays across surfaces, accentuating subtle shifts in timber grain, stone, and bespoke detailing curated by the interior design team.

Every space feels considered, with moments that reward both wide architectural framing and selective close ups. Wide shots allowed the residence to assert itself within its site, negotiating scale and context, while tighter frames focused on the nuanced interplay of material and tactility brought to life through the interior scheme. Here, the camera became a tool to explore craft at both macro and micro scales, from spatial flow to door handles, joinery junctions, and textured finishes.

Photographing this project also highlighted how architecture and interior design can work in tandem to create a cohesive experience. Rather than accentuating single “hero” elements, the quality arises from the sum of many carefully considered parts, something that becomes apparent in imagery where rhythm and repetition, material warmth, and light gradation create a unified visual narrative.

Ultimately, this assignment reaffirmed why architectural photography matters, it is about communicating the essence of space, how it feels, how it functions, and how design choices resonate with everyday life. This residence embodies a thoughtful modern home, grounded in craft and connection to its landscape, and it was a privilege to interpret that through the lens.
