Tregulland Cottage & Barn, A Cornish Retreat Where Design Meets Experience

Nestled on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, Tregulland Cottage & Barn stands as a rare example of thoughtful architectural design that balances luxury, landscape and lived experience. I recently had the pleasure of photographing this exceptional space for Tregulland & Co, capturing both the meticulous detailing of the interiors and the expansive character of the rural setting.

A Sense of Place

The first impression of Tregulland is its setting, a secluded valley framed by soft, rolling hills and woodland. This isn’t just a backdrop, it’s part of the design narrative, a landscape that sets the tone for the interiors and how they are experienced throughout the day. Large, uninterrupted views draw the eye outward, making the surrounding countryside an integral part of each space.

Interiors That Breathe and Invite

Inside, the architecture speaks a language of warmth and conviviality:

Generous communal spaces, The kitchen and dining areas are designed for shared moments, from morning coffee to long, leisurely dinners. Practicality meets style with carefully considered materials and bespoke detailing that enrich every moment spent there.

Luxurious yet lived in bedrooms, Bedrooms across both the cottage and the barn offer serenity and comfort, with soft textiles and views that invite guests to slow down. Each room tells a story of craftsmanship, proportion and atmosphere.

Wellness and leisure integrated into everyday life, The indoor freshwater pool, steam room and outdoor wood fired hot tub introduce elements of leisure that feel intrinsic rather than appended, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on wellbeing.

Spaces for Every Occasion

One of the remarkable aspects of Tregulland is its versatility. From intimate family gatherings to larger celebrations and corporate retreats, the architectural layouts facilitate a broad range of activities:

The Old Workshop functions as a flexible, light filled space, perfect for workshops, yoga sessions, or celebratory gatherings.
Accommodation and amenity balance, Eleven ensuite bedrooms across both buildings ensure comfort for large groups without compromising on privacy or design quality.

Design Detailing

Photographing Tregulland revealed layers of design decisions that foster both visual delight and practical use:

Materiality and texture, Natural materials, tactility and thoughtful finishes come alive in photography, showcasing how tactile elements like timber, stone and textiles interact with soft natural light.
Light and spatial rhythm, The project’s lighting, both natural and artificial, defines its rhythm. From morning sunlight across open living spaces to evening warmth around the pool, each moment revealed a different character.
Framing the experience, Composition in these interiors was as much about what was left out as what was included, ensuring each image invites the viewer into the moment rather than simply documenting a space.

Architecture as Experience

Tregulland Cottage & Barn is a residential project that goes beyond accommodation, it’s a space designed for living, connecting, relaxing and celebrating. Photographing it reinforced for me how great design is not just seen but felt, through light, proportion, material and context.
