Location: West Sussex , UK
Perched directly on the shoreline of the West Sussex coast, Beach House is a contemporary family home that looks to the sea as its primary spatial and visual reference. Rather than retreat from the coastal elements, the architecture welcomes them: strong openings frame wide ocean views, while the building’s form and materials mediate between shelter and exposure.
In photographing this house, my aim was to illustrate how the design negotiates the shifting moods of the beach environment — from calm summer light to the dramatic tonalities of stormy skies. The resulting images document not just architectural form, but how light, material and space relate to site and atmosphere.
The exterior photography focuses on the building’s direct engagement with the seascape. From the beach-facing façades to the subtle transitions between solid and void, each frame explores how the house sits in tension between openness and protection. The soft, curved timber cladding and grounded stone elements anchor the composition against the horizon, while the strategic positioning of terraces and cantilevered balconies reveal an architecture shaped by both view and wind direction.
These wide views also give a sense of scale and orientation — crucial in coastal projects where spatial experience is constantly keyed to the ever-changing weather and tides.
Inside, the house is structured to maximise connection with its surroundings while maintaining moments of interior calm. Open-plan living spaces and generous glazing establish a visual thread to the beach, yet the way light filters through these spaces varies dramatically throughout the day. My interior shots prioritise light quality, spatial flow and material layering — elements that architectural audiences often look for in published work.
By choosing vantage points that emphasise depth and alignment, these images show how functional zones (living, dining, circulation) are composed around framed views and atmospheric shifts.
